Welcome to Year One!
In Year One we have Mrs Blackburn (1CB), Mrs Rayment and Mrs Howie (1AC) as Class Teachers.
Mrs Schofield and Ms Elson support the children as Teaching Assistants.
Year One classrooms are located just inside the infant building internal entrance and accessed through entrance from the infant playground.
Our first topic this year will be ‘Inside Out’. Within this, we will explore about ourselves and others, people in the world around us, pets, and much more! Our Literacy work will be based around a wide variety of texts, relevant to this topic, and both our fortnightly outdoor learning sessions with Mr Bean and Miss Ikoku, and afternoon sessions, will also be linked to this topic.
Our second topic this year will be 'Commotion in the Ocean'. We will begin the topic with the poetry book by Giles Andreae and then use it as a stimulus to create our own riddles. Following the poetry work , we will read The Storm Whale by Benji Davies and write our own non chronological reports about different sea creatures.
We went to Manchester Opera House to watch George's Marvellous Medicine in November.
In January, we plan to visit the Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port.
Each term the children will be set a homework project that links to the topic covered during that time. This will be set with plenty of time before the deadline and there will be a range of options to choose from. Homework projects will be shared with the class and displayed in the classroom.
My Maths and Purple mash are online learning websites where the children engage with Maths.. Children have their own login and are shown how to access them at school. Please explore these websites at home for fun, educational games: http://www.mymaths.co.uk/primary https://www.purplemash.com/sch/
Big Talk for our Proud Pieces of Homework
For Proud Pieces the children will need to do their talking homework with an adult on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday night, ready for Proud Pieces on Thursday morning. Talking Homework is a chance for them to talk about what they are going to write during the Proud Piece lesson. By helping your child with this it will enable them to:
1. Think through and discuss their initial ideas for their Proud Piece of Writing.
2. Get their writing ideas clear in their heads by thinking about and discussing the order of what they will write.
Each group has spellings sent home half-termly, these spellings are tested on a Monday as dated.
Groups: Mrs Blackburn, Mrs Rayment, Mrs Schofield and Ms Elson.
We are focusing on working hard in our secrets of success this term, and our spellings will certainly allow for everyone to meet this aspect! We are following the new curriculum now with spellings, and we know they are much trickier than what we were used to, however please support your child as much as possible to learn the spelling pattern and do not worry too much if they cannot spell all 10 words yet. It is a journey that the whole school is making together and hopefully will result in your children being amazing spellers!
These need to be in school everyday as the children have quiet reading time each afternoon, with the opportunity to also change their reading book. We also listen to groups of children read each day and usually put letters home in their book bags so it is a good idea to check them daily too!
We are continuing our 'Parent' Reading mornings every Thursday and would like to invite parents, childminders, grandparents, aunties and uncles into school to sit and share stories and information books with their child. This is an informal session from 8.45-9.15am. We hope you can join us!
We encourage the children to leave their P.E. kits in school all half term in case there are any changes in the timetable. This half-term, children in Year 1 will be focusing on gymnastics on a Friday afternoon.
School Dinners and Snack
We encourage all children to have a water bottle in school every day so they can drink regularly. A snack of fresh fruit is available every morning break. Now, each day the children have the opportunity to buy a snack for 25p. Please bring money in in a named purse.
Year One News Items:
Please ensure PE kits, wellies and water bottles are in school all week.
Please name ALL items of clothing. A lot of jumpers/cardigans are getting misplaced - names will make it much easier to solve the whereabouts!
We are using the same reading records as last year, so please check for any comments and let us know how your child is getting on with their books. We are trying to get into a routine of changing books every day. If your child has not changed their book please let us know as they are still adapting to doing it by themselves.
Year One Letters Home:
If you have any information, queries, or just wish to share some news with your child's class teacher, we aim to be available before and after school when possible. Alternatively, you are more than welcome to contact us via our email addresses listed at the top of this page.
